Semana Santa is one of the most important cultural celebrations in Mexico, and our course gives you the opportunity to experience its traditions firsthand. On Viernes Santo (the Friday of the Easter week), we travel to Ocotepec to witness a remarkable Viacrucis procession that has been held in the community for around 200 years. On Domingo de Resurrección (Easter Sunday), we head to Tetela del Volcán, where elaborate handmade costumes and masks form part of a spectacular local tradition that culminates in their dramatic burning.

Your immersion continues beyond the major Semana Santa celebrations. You’ll learn about Mexican traditions through hands-on experiences, including a cookery class where you’ll prepare traditional Semana Santa dishes, a tour of a local Easter market and a ceramic workshop with a local artisan. What will I experience during Semana Santa?

What happens in Tetela del Volcán on Easter Sunday?
Tetela del Volcán is known for a distinctive Domingo de Resurrección tradition involving elaborate handmade costumes and masks. Local participants spend considerable time preparing their costumes before taking part in the Easter Sunday celebrations, which culminate in the dramatic burning of the costumes.
Do I need to speak Spanish to join the course?
No. Students of different Spanish levels are welcome, including beginners. Your Spanish classes will be appropriate to your level, while the cultural activities and excursions provide opportunities to practise Spanish naturally outside the classroom.
Is the Semana Santa course a Spanish course or a cultural tour?
It’s a combination of both. You’ll receive Spanish instruction while also experiencing Mexican culture through local celebrations, excursions, food, workshops and interactions with the community. The aim is to learn Spanish while experiencing Mexico rather than simply studying in a classroom.
