Semana Santa (Easter): Spanish Immersion Course

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is the week leading up to Easter Sunday and is one of the most important celebrations in Mexico. While rooted in Christian traditions, Semana Santa in Mexico has developed distinctive local customs, processions, ceremonies, food and community celebrations. Traditions vary from one town to another, making it a fascinating time to experience Mexican culture and see how different communities celebrate Easter.

Celebrations vary considerably from one town to another, which is why our course takes you beyond Cuernavaca to experience traditions in places such as Ocotepec and Tetela del Volcán.

Joining a Spanish immersion course during Semana Santa offers far more than classroom learning. As Semana Santa is one of Mexico’s most vibrant cultural celebrations, you’ll hear Spanish spoken everywhere — from local markets and cafés to public celebrations and everyday conversations. Its historic churches, lively plazas, and welcoming local community provide the perfect setting to experience traditional celebrations while continuing your Spanish studies. Known as the City of Eternal Spring, Cuernavaca’s warm climate and relaxed atmosphere make it an ideal place to immerse yourself in both the language and Mexican culture.

Alongside your classes, you’ll take part in carefully selected cultural activities, explore local traditions, and experience the unique atmosphere that makes Semana Santa such a memorable time to visit Mexico.

You’ll be placed in a class that matches your ability, allowing you to learn at a comfortable pace while building confidence through daily immersion in the Spanish language and Mexican culture.

You’ll experience a variety of Mexican Easter traditions throughout the course, including the historic Viernes Santo Viacrucis procession in Ocotepec and the unique Domingo de Resurrección celebrations in Tetela del Volcán. You’ll also take part in cultural activities such as a traditional Mexican cookery class and a Semana Santa market tour.

The Viacrucis is a traditional Good Friday procession representing the Stations of the Cross. Ocotepec has a particularly longstanding tradition, with its annual procession dating back around 200 years. Our visit allows students to experience this important local celebration and learn about its place in the community.

Tetela del Volcán is known for a distinctive Domingo de Resurrección tradition involving elaborate handmade costumes and masks. Local participants spend considerable time preparing their costumes before taking part in the Easter Sunday celebrations, which culminate in the dramatic burning of the costumes.

It’s a combination of both. You’ll receive Spanish instruction while also experiencing Mexican culture through local celebrations, excursions, food, workshops and interactions with the community. The aim is to learn Spanish while experiencing Mexico rather than simply studying in a classroom.
